when my family moved to o'ahu in 1986, the moment we arrived felt like home. of course, i quickly learned humility was key because the hawaiian islands have a very real and painful history of colonialism. the lesson: quiet down and always arrive in graciousness with the highest level of respect. the layers of this extraordinary archipelago began to reveal themselves.

one of the places that touched me deeply is the sapphire stretch of ocean beyond kahauloa cove. it is the type of wild blue that stirs emotions. it is something to behold. it is breathtaking.
